The Captain John Kendrick Maritime Museum in Wareham, MA, is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the maritime heritage of the region, particularly highlighting the legacy of Captain John Kendrick, a prominent American explorer and ship captain of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.Originally home to the captain when not at sea, the 1745 house exemplifies Georgian-style architecture, a popular design during his era. Characterized by its symmetrical façade and refined proportions, the house features a classic central doorway, wood siding and a gambrel roof.
In 2024, Vareika Construction, Inc. worked closely with the Wareham Historical Society to restore the Captain John Kendrick House. Early in the process, Vareika tackled rot repairs to ensure the structural soundness and preservation of the building. Building materials were researched thoroughly and installed meticulously in order to uphold the historical authenticity of this quintessential maritime New England home. Some of the main focuses of this project were:
- Restoring the foundation of the main house, including treating the exposed brick
- Repointing and gap filling the fieldstone foundation
- Replacing the bulkhead
- Waterproofing and weather proofing
- Replaced and repainted the wood clapboard siding and cedar trim
- Installed copper flashing
- Reroofed with Western Red Cedar shingles
- Rot repair and prevention
- Selective historic window and door maintenance and/or replacements
- Vegetation removal, trimming, and general landscaping upgrades
